A Ride Through the Heart of Jerusalem
I recently participated in the Sovev Yerushalayim annual bike ride circling the city of Jerusalem, together with thousands of other participants, in anticipation of this year’s Jerusalem Day. It was a truly breathtaking experience biking around our capital, experiencing the physical beauty that surrounds the city. Every turn had a new wonderful view to absorb, which enhanced the incredible exhilaration of the physically challenging exercise.
Choosing Presence Over Documentation
I was tempted constantly to pull out my phone to document the experience, by taking pictures of the picturesque views along the way. But I made a conscious decision from the beginning to just experience the event and not worry about trying to capture it on film. Why? Because sometimes you need to live life and forget about trying to document it for others to see, even if the ‘others’ might include your future self. In today’s social media dominated environment, when sharing what you’re doing is often prioritized above maximizing the experience itself, I feel it’s even more important for us to live life to its utmost potential as it’s actually happening.
From the Bike Trail to Financial Balance
How does this relate to finances and why am I bringing it up at this point in time? Because as I wrote in a recent article about the importance of balancing one’s quality and meaning in life on the one hand, and one’s long term financial health on the other hand, so too we need to balance between planning for our future and living life in the present.
The Right Time for the Right Experience
A colleague of mine sent me some positive feedback on my recent article and wrote to me that it reminded her of another book that she recently read called Dying with Zero by Bill Perkins. One of the main points that he makes in his book relates to the difference in our ability to enjoy and experience events at different times during our lives. Traveling the world at age three is likely to have a limited impact on us and we probably won’t remember much, and running a marathon at age 90 is probably not an option for most of us. We need to live our lives in the optimal way at the optimal time. There are optimal times when we can enjoy experiences, and likewise there are optimal times to spend our money in the most effective way. Continuing to tuck away assets after saving large sums during our lifetime, instead of enjoying our resources, is undoubtedly foolish.
At Labinsky Financial, we believe that true wealth is about more than just numbers – it’s about living meaningfully today while planning responsibly for tomorrow. We guide our clients in finding the balance between enjoying life’s moments and securing long-term financial health. Whether it’s reducing financial stress, gaining the freedom to pursue meaningful work, or aligning spending with personal values, our goal is to help you live well – both now and in the future.
Freedom: The Greatest Financial Return
While I don’t necessarily agree with Perkins’ basic conclusion that buying experiences can make you happy in life, I do agree that money has the ability to give you the freedom to choose what you want to spend your time on, where and with whom. This freedom might be the most significant benefit that money offers us. If we can cut down on our standard of living to create a lower threshold of income necessary to survive, we may be able to reduce the necessary hours needed to invest in our jobs. Or at least we’ll feel less pressure to take on that extra job, or to climb the corporate ladder.
Infusing Work with Meaning
Most of us need to work or choose to work, in order to support our families, and to accomplish meaningful things in our lives. Instead of just going through life focusing on the need to generate income to support our current and future selves, let’s also ensure that we are injecting meaning into our daily grind by working on the intangibles – our thoughts, intentions and kavanot. We need to try to incorporate meaningful intentions into our daily practices in order to elevate the significant nature of our work and create the meaningful experiences, by elevating even our day-to-day grind.
With continued prayers for the safe return of all of our hostages, the safety of our soldiers in all their missions, and the security of our nation.
